1993 yılında federal hükümet, federal Din Özgürlüğü Restorasyon Yasası geçti. Yasa nedeniyle yasadışı uyuşturucu peyote katılan dini törenlerde işlerini kaybetme tehlikesiyle karşı yerli Amerikalıları korumak amaçlanmıştır. O zamandan bu yana 20 devletler "din özgürlüğü" yasaları kendi versiyonlarını geçti ve 12 daha bu yıl mevzuat girmiştik. Hukukun Destekleyenler hükümetin sahiplerinin inançlarına aykırı yaşam tarzlarına katılan müşterilerine hizmet dini işletmeler ve kiliseleri zorlamamak gerektiğini savunuyorlar. Hukuk savunucuları, siyasi bağlam 1992 yılından bu yana değişti ve devletlerin artık gay ve lezbiyen çiftler ayrımcılık niyeti ile hukuk kendi versiyonlarını geçirmeden savunuyorlar.
