A powerful battalion of conservative Christians has pushed ahead. In recent months, they have quietly laid the groundwork for their fight to restrict not only access to abortion but also to I.V.F.They are planting seeds for their ultimate goal of ending abortion from conception, both within the Republican Party and beyond it. They face a tough political battle since their positions are largely unpopular and do not reflect majority opinion, particularly on I.V.F.“I expect there will be steps backwards as well as what we are working toward, which are long strikes forward,” said R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., who has been newly mobilizing evangelicals against I.V.F.

Former President Donald J. Trump claimed without evidence in an interview broadcast on Tuesday that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had denied him sufficient Secret Service protection and that they were therefore partly responsible for the assassination attempt against him last month.“Our people were always fighting to get more security, more Secret Service, and he knew that we didn’t have enough,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Biden during an interview with the television host Phil McGraw, known as Dr. Phil. “I think to a certain extent it’s Biden’s fault and Harris’s fault. And I’m the opponent. Look, they were weaponizing government against me. They brought in the whole D.O.J. to try and get me. They weren’t too interested in my health and safety.”The Secret Service has been under a cloud since July 13, when the gunman was able to fire, unimpeded, on Mr. Trump at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pa. The attack grazed Mr. Trump’s ear, killed a spectator and seriously wounded two others. The F.B.I. is investigating, and congressional leaders have also opened inquiries. But there is no evidence that Mr. Biden or Ms. Harris knew about any deficiencies in Mr. Trump’s protection. The former president’s remarks to Dr. Phil were similar to what Mr. Trump had written in a social media post in July, when he blamed Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris for the shooting and said they had failed to protect him.

A Pennsylvania judge on Monday refused the Philadelphia district attorney’s request to block daily $1 million giveaways from Elon Musk’s pro-Trump super PAC in the lead-up to the election. Judge Angelo Foglietta refused to block the giveaways in a one-page order with no explanation. He said he would detail his reasoning in writing separately. The decision comes just one day before Election Day, the final day that America PAC plans to hand out a $1 million check to a registered swing state voter. Musk’s lawyer Chris Gober argued at Monday’s hearing that the super PAC does not choose winners at random but rather for their potential as spokespeople, seeking to contradict Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s (D) accusation that it is running an “illegal lottery.” “The $1 million recipients are not chosen by chance. We know exactly who will be announced as the $1 million recipient today and tomorrow,” Gober said, according to The Associated Press. He also noted that America PAC’s final giveaways will go to registered voters in Arizona and Michigan and will not impact Pennsylvania. The super PAC launched the giveaway in late October. Registered voters in seven swing states, including Pennsylvania, who signed the PAC’s petition supporting free speech and the right to bear arms were eligible. America PAC has handed out 16 checks worth $1 million each so far, with four going to registered voters in Pennsylvania. Krasner sued Musk and his super PAC last week, accusing them of running an “illegal lottery” under Pennsylvania state law and asking the court to put the giveaways on hold ahead of the election. The Philadelphia district attorney said Monday he would also seek financial penalties against Musk and America PAC, according to Reuters. Musk’s lawyers attempted to move the case to federal court. However, U.S. District Judge Gerald Pappert rejected the request Friday, sending the case back to state court and allowing a hearing to proceed before Election Day.
